A Tired Walker, a Hot Day, A Dirt Road

He

was

bent

or

so it looked to me.

He

was

old

or

so it seemed to me.

I

passed him

easily.

I was young.

He

looked

down

at the dirt road.

He

did not

look

up

at me

even after I got by him.

I

know

he did not look

at me

even after I got by him.

I looked back.

He was still bent and old.

He was still looking down

at the dirt road.

Only

now

he was

behind

me.

When

I looked

ahead

there was this one bend

in the dry road

at least

so far as

I

could see.

When

I

looked back

again

he was

gone

or so it seemed to me.

The bend in the road

was still

ahead.

I passed it easily.

I was young.
